THE NEW HEAVEN AND THE NEW EARTH, INTRODUCTION

Revelation 21:1-8

1. Believers are to focus on Heaven. (Col. 3:1-4)

2. Heaven is our Home, and everything that belongs to us is There!

     a. Spiritual Blessings. (Eph. 1:3)

     b. The Heavenly Father is there.

     c. The Lord and Savior.

     d. Countless loved-ones.

     e. Our name.

     f. Inheritance

     g. Treasure and reward.

3. Desiring Heaven exerts a powerful influence on believer's lives here on earth

    a. We will be like Him. (I John 3:2)

    b. One of the surest indicators of genuine salvation.

    c. Produces Christian character. (I John 3:3)

    d. Brings Joy and Comfort in the midst of trials.

    e. Gives unusual strength against earthly temptations.

    f. Maintains enthusiasm for Spiritual Service.

    g. Honors and glorifies God.

4. Scripture refers to Heaven more than 500 times

5. THREE Distinct Heavens of the Bible

    a. The Frist Heaven, "Earth's Atmosphere"

    b. The Second Heaven, "Outerspace"

    c. The Third Heaven, "The dwelling place of God."

6. Christ is presently preparing us a place in Heaven!

I. THE APPEARANCE OF THE NEW HEAVEN AND THE NEW EARTH (21:1)

     A. 'Emmanuel" - God with us!

THE NEW JERUSALEM: It's General Appearance

Text: Revelation 21:9-11

I. RESIDENCE OF THE BRIDE (21:9)

   A. Adorned for Her Husband. (cp. 21:2)

   B. Enlarged to include the redeemed of all ages.

II. THE VANTAGE POINT (21:10a)

III. THE 'HOLINESS' OF THE CITY (21:10b)

     A. It's a "GREAT city."

     B. It is "HOLY" in its nature, character, and inhabitants.
 
     C. It is "NEW" in that its holiness is unlike any previous, earthly city. (cp. 21:2a)

IV. THE SHINING GLORY OF GOD (21:11)

     A. The light of God's glory is reflected from it.

     B. The light of God's glory truly is like "A Diamond in the Sky"

The New Jerusalem: It's Exterior Design

Revelation 21:12-21a

I. IT'S GATED WALL (21:12-14, 17-18,21)

   A. It has a GREAT wall (v. 12)

       'megas' = mighty, strong, wonderful, beautiful, glorious

  B. It has a HIGH wall (v. 17)

      'cubit' = 18" (cf. Deuteronomy 3:11)

  C. It has TWELVE GATES (vs. 12-13)

      Constructed of PEARL. (v. 21)

D. It is surrounded by TWELVE ANGELS (v. 12)

E. The wall has TWELVE FOUNDATIONS (vs. 14, 19, 20)

F. The BUILDING MATERIAL of the wall (v. 18)

    'jasper' = quartz-like material; very strong, very colorful, very beautiful.

II. IT'S EXTERIOR MEASUREMENTS (21:15-16)

The New Jerusalem: Its Internal Character

Revelation 21:21b - 22:2

A. THE STREET OF GOLD (21:21b)

     1. Transparency allows God's glory to shine throughout.

      2. There will be no need for privacy.

B. THE TEMPLE (21:22)

     1. The Lord Himself is the temple.

     2. There will be no need for sacrifices.

     3. Heaven will be filled with worship.

C. THE LIGHT OF THE CITY (21:23-25)

     1. God IS light. (I John 1:5)

     2. Jesus IS the light. (John 8:12)

     3. "Nations" means 'multitudes of people.'

D. THE INHABITANTS OF THE CITY (21:27)

     1. Only by acceptance of Jesus Christ does man have access.

     2. Those who enter do so as objects of God's grace.

E. THE RIVER OF LIFE (22:1)

     1. It speaks of power, purity, and eternal life.

     2. It has no trace of pollution.

F. THE TREE OF LIFE (22:2)

     1. Twelve different types of fruit.

     2. The tree is an expression of eternal blessing.

THE PRIVILEGES OF IT'S INHABITANTS

Text: Revelation 22:3-5

I. NO LONGER UNDER THE CURSE (22:3a)

   A. No more suffering, pain.

   B. No more DEATH!

II. FOREVER SERVING THE LAMB UNHINDERED (22:3c)

    A. It is a joy to serve Jesus!

    B. It will be a joy to serve Him forever!

III. BEHOLDING THE FACE OF THE LAMB (22:4a)

     A. A Heavenly Vision!

     B. "Face to face! O blissful moment."

IV. BEING ALLOWED TO WEAR HIS NAME (22:4b)

     A. An identification of possession.

     B. A priviledge to the Overcomers (cf. Rev. 3:12)

V. ETERNAL LIGHT (22:5a)

     A. Unimaginable beauty!   

VI. ETERNAL DOMINION (22:5b)

     A. Fulfillment of Christ's promise. (Rev. 3:21)

FOUR COMMANDS, IN CLOSING

Text: Revelation 22:6-12

I. KEEP YOUR EYES ON THIS PROPHECY (22:6-7)

   A. The prophecies are faithful and true.

   B. The Sobering Declaration of Christ.

   C. The Sixth Beatitude of Revelation.

   D. The  Command of Christ.

II. WORSHIP GOD (22:8-9)

    A. John's Misdirected Worship.

GOD'S LAST INVITATION

Text: Revelation 22:13-21

I. THE INVITATION (22:17)

    A. The Holy Spirit and the Church beckons sinners to "Come."

    B. The message to those who will hear is "Come" (v. 17b).

    C. The message to those who are thirsty is "Come" (v. 17c).

    D. The message is to "Whosoever Will" (v. 17d).

II. THE INCENTIVES (Rev. 22:13-16, 18-21)

    A. Because of WHO Christ is. (22:13,16)

    B. Because of the Blessings of Heaven. (22:14-15)

    C. Because of the Truthfulness of Scripture. (22:18-19)

    D. Because of the Certainty of Christ's Return. (22:20-21)
